Malcolm X/El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz was an African-American Muslim minister, public speaker, Black Nationalist, and human rights activist. He was a courageous voice for the rights of African Americans in the late 1950s through the mid-1960s. He severely critiqued American for historic and contemporary injustices against black Americans. He is an iconic figure whose legacy continues to be researched and debated today. Malcolm X has been described as one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in Molefi Kete Asante’s work 100 Greatest African Americans: A Biographical Encyclopedia (Prometheus Books, 2002).
